CANTON, Ohio – Texas Southern University women’s golf team finished first in their season opener during the inaugural Clearview Althea Gibson / Renee Powell Invitational Thursday.
Following her 4-over 76 in the first round, freshman Kennedi Lee secured the individual win for the Lady Tigers with her 156 total. Junior Ashlie Hobbs was one stroke back in second place and sophomore Lyla Vaughn finished third respectively.
“We had a positive start as a women’s program, but we hopefully will improve our performances collectively,” Texas Southern University head golf coach Dr. Gary Grandison said. “We had a unique experience that hopefully can help us to develop.”
On the men’s side, freshman William O’Connor finished in second place individually with his 3-over total score of 147 (74-73). Teammate and fellow freshman, Paul Kci Lindskog was two strokes back and tied for third with his total score of 149 (74-75). The men’s team finished in second place overall.
“We have a young but talented men’s team,” Grandison said. “I am excited to see how we grow from this experience.”
The men’s team returns to the links Sept. 23-25 at the Black College Alumni Hall of Fame, while the women’s team competes Sept. 26-29 in the Toyota Bearkat Invitational.
The inaugural Clearview Althea Gibson / Renee Powell Invitational is named after Renee Powell, PGA of America Hall of Fame inductee, and the late great Althea Gibson, International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame inductee.
