Women’s Basketball Travels 50 Miles To Take On Prairie View On Saturday

•The Texas Southern women’s basketball team will travel 52 miles down the road to face Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) foe Prairie View A&M on Saturday at 3 p.m.

•Texas Southern (4-15 Overall, 3-5 SWAC) fell to Alabama State, 62-55 on Monday night inside the H&PE Arena. The Tigers were paced by Jaida Belton’s 19 points and nine boards, as she went 11-of-16 from the charity stripe. Taniya Lawson chipped in 13 points, while defensively, Nya Harmon tallied three steals.

•Prairie View (8-9, 4-3) beat Alabama A&M, 65-59 at home on Monday as Ryann Payne led the Panthers with 27 points and four assists. Jada Roberson added 15 points and three steals.

•The Tigers and the Panthers are tied at five games each in the last 10 match-ups, dating back to the 2017-2018 season.

The Panthers were predicted to finish sixth in the SWAC Preseason Poll.

•PVAMU is led by Payne who is the third leading scorer in the SWAC as she is averaging 14.6 points on 93-of-215 shooting from the field (.433). Additionally, she sits at No. 5 in the conference for steals averaging 2.1 per game.

•The Tigers are led offensively by Lawson as she averages 11.5 points and 3.0 boards. •Belton is the second leading blocker in the SWAC having 33 in 19 games played.

•The Tigers will have a lot to prove as they were selected to finish 11th in the Preseason SWAC Predicted Order of Finish.

• The Tigers brought in nine newcomers this year. However, they’ve lost nine letterwin- ners and feature a pair of new assistant coaches.
