Eight games in the Houston area along with five home games highlight an exciting 2024 history-making Texas Southern football schedule.
Travel won’t be an issue for Texas Southern this season as two of its road contests are located 90 miles or less from the city of Houston with another “road” contest located in Houston. The Tigers will not leave the state of Texas for its first true road contest until the month of November.
History will also be made on this year’s schedule as this marks the first time ever that Texas Southern will host the trio of Southern University, Jackson State and Grambling State in Houston during the same year. The last time TSU hosted Southern and Jackson State occurred in 1999 while TSU faced both Grambling State and Jackson State in Houston during the 2022 season. In addition, TSU will play Southern in Houston for the first time since 2020 (spring) and 2017 (fall) while Lamar University returns to the schedule after a 39-year hiatus. Bethune-Cookman also returns to the city of Houston for the first time since 1981.
The Cris Dishman era kicks off on Saturday, Aug. 31 in Prairie View, Texas as TSU will face rival Prairie View A&M in the annual Labor Day Classic at Panther Stadium. One week later (Sept. 7), TSU will face Rice University for the second consecutive season as it’ll also mark the team’s lone Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent as Rice enters its second year in the American Athletic Conference. The Tigers will have an early bye weekend on Sept. 14 and will return to action on Sept. 21 as they’ll face Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas for the first time since 1985.
TSU opens its home schedule and returns to SWAC play on Sept. 28 as Jackson State comes to Shell Energy Stadium. One week later, the team will open the month of October as Virginia University of Lynchburg comes to Houston for a Homecoming match-up on Oct. 5.
On Oct. 12, Southern University returns to the city of Houston for the first time since the spring of 2020 as they’ll face off against TSU at Shell Energy Stadium. Two weeks later on Oct. 26, TSU will battle Grambling State at Shell Energy Stadium to close out the month of October.
TSU finally leaves the state on Saturday, Nov. 2 as they’ll head to Tallahassee, Fla. to square off against Florida A&M in its Homecoming as TSU returns to the city for the first time since 2017. The Tigers remain on the road on Nov. 9 at Alcorn State followed by its 2024 home and senior weekend finale against Bethune-Cookman at Shell Energy Stadium on Nov. 16. The 2024 regular season concludes on Saturday, Nov. 23 at Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Pine Bluff, Ark.
The 2024 spring game date, season ticket packages, game times, stadium protocols and additional game promotions will be announced as information becomes available.
