Belton’s Career High 24 Points And 18 Rebounds Paces Tigers To Win Over Alabama A&M

Jaida Belton tallied a career-high 24 points and 18 rebounds as the Texas Southern women’s basketball team beat Alabama A&M, 61-55 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play on Saturday evening inside the H&PE Arena.

Texas Southern (4-14 Overall, 3-4 SWAC) snapped a four game losing streak against Alabama A&M (8-10, 3-3) which dates back to the 2020-21 season. The last time the Tigers beat the Bulldogs was Feb. 2020 (79-76) in the H&PE Arena.

Along with Belton’s 24 points and 18 rebounds, she tallied four blocks and two steals. Taniya Lawson added 10 points, respectively.

Daria Burgin paced the Bulldogs with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. Amiah Simmons added 14 points.

The Bulldogs had its last lead, 7-6, in the first quarter after a jumper by Burgin with 6:36 remaining in the first. The Tigers led by as many as eight points in the first quarter (17-9) after a jumper by Imani Morris. The Bulldogs were able to cut the deficit to four, trailing 20-16 going into the second.

Texas Southern opened the second quarter with a 10-4 run capped by a jumper by Belton in the paint. The Tigers had a dominant second quarter outscoring AAMU 23-14 on 10-of-17 from the field to Alabama A&M’s 6-of-13 from the field. TSU had a 13 point advantage (43-30) going into the break.

Alabama would win the third quarter, 15-12 and limited TSU to just six points in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough as TSU kept the lead majority of the game. The closest AAMU would get is a five point defect with 3:49 remaining.
