Lawson Has Career High As Women’s Basketball Returns To The Court

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Taniya Lawson and Andriana Avent combined for 34 points but the Texas Southern University women’s basketball team couldn’t keep up after a high-scoring first quarter in a 108-51 loss to Florida State at the Donald L. Tucker Center on Sunday afternoon.

Lawson’s 18 points are a new career high in her short time donning a Tigers uniform as the freshman from Capitol Heights, Md., had a previous high of 11 set against UT Arlington in her career debut on Nov. 7 as well as against UTEP on Nov. 16.

The 18 points were on 7-for-16 shooting from the field, 3-for-5 from long range and 1-for-1 from the free throw line. The seven field goals and three three-pointers were also single-game highs for Lawson.

Avent, who was named the SWAC Player of the Week on Nov. 28, added 16 points eight rebounds and three blocks. Her eight rebounds tied her own single-game high as a Tigers hooper that was previously set on Feb. 21, 2022, in a victory at Ark.-Pine Bluff.

TSU (0-8) started out strong and would only trail by eight points after the opening quarter, but the wheels simply fell off by scoring just 27 over the final three quarters.

The Seminoles (10-1) were able to get a game-high 34 points out of Ta’Niya Latson, who was one of four on the team to score in double figures.

The Tigers had no answer for Latson who was 12-for-19 from the field including 1-for-1 from long range and 9-for-10 from the charity stripe.

TSU had a scoring run of 7-0 during a nearly three-minute span in the second quarter, but that pails in comparison to the 19-0 run by the Seminoles over 7:41 during the third quarter.

The Seminoles also led the way in offensive categories such as points off turnovers (29-10), points in the paint (58-22), second chance points (20-14), fast break points (27-8) and points off the bench (34-4).
