3 Score In Double Figures As Women’s Basketball Defeats Alcorn State

A strong first half was the earmark for the Texas Southern women’s basketball victory over Alcorn State 60-50 in their penultimate game of the 2020-21 season.

The result marks the Tigers’ (5-8, 4-7 SWAC) ninth straight home victory over the visiting Alcorn State (6-12, 6-8 SWAC) team, which began on March 2, 2013 with a 70-43 score.

Following an even first quarter, TSU took control of the game in the second quarter on the back of a 19-6 scoring margin that was led by Te’Aire Hambrick’s nine points. In between the first and second quarter during a space of nearly 10 minutes, TSU strung together a 20-4 scoring run and consolidated a 30-16 advantage at the break.

TSU’s comfortable lead withered away in the third quarter as they committed 12 turnovers which trimmed their lead to single-digits (44-37).

Nevertheless, TSU’s bid for its third win in five games wasn’t denied as an 8-0 run at the tail end of the fourth quarter was capped by Namiko Adams’ successive layups, increasing the team’s lead to 56-42 at the 2:36 mark.

Ataiya Bridges led the team with 19 points, six assists, two rebounds and one block.

Two of her teammates scored double-digit points with Namiko Adams shining on a career night with a near double-double of 15 points (new personal best) on 7-of-9 shooting and nine rebounds in addition to three steals, one assist and a blocked shot. She was joined in the distinguished group by Hambrick who scored 13 points, pulled six rebounds and snatched four steals.

TSU will play its regular season finale on Saturday as they’ll face Southern for their second game at the M.O. Campbell Center at 1 p.m.
