Women’s Basketball Back In Action At Houston After Week Long Exam Break

•The Texas Southern women’s basketball team had a week off for final exams and is now back in action as they will travel just one mile down the road to take on the University of Houston on Tuesday at the Fertitta Center. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m.

•The last time these two teams faced each other was Dec. of 2008. Texas Southern dropped a 66-44 decision. The Cougars lead the all-time series 13-1 as Texas Southern’s lone win was Dec. of 1981 (74-43).

•The Tigers are coming off a 74-44 loss to Rice University on Wednesday night inside the Tudor Fieldhouse. Texas Southern was led by Taniya Lawson who tallied 12 points.

•Defensively, sophomore forward Jaida Belton had five blocks and seven rebounds on the night.

•Houston (6-1) defeated Texas A&M Commerce, 86-53, for its first road win of the season on Friday evening.

•Maliyah Johnson, N’Yah Boyd, and Djessira Diawara, led the team with 12 points each.

•Houston joined the Big 12 on July 1, 2023 after a decade long tenure in the American Athletic Conference (ACC). The Cougars finished its last season in the ACC going 15-16 overall and 10-5 in the conference, as they fell in the ACC Championship, 46-44 to East Carolina.

•Additionally, they were selected to finish 12th in the Big 12 Preseason Women’s Basketball Poll.

•The Tigers will have a lot to prove as they were selected to finish 11th in the Preseason SWAC Predicted Order of Finish.

• The Tigers will see a lot of new faces this year as they’ve brought in nine new- comers. However, they’ve lost nine letterwinners and feature a pair of new assistant coaches.
