Wilson Wins Triple Jump, Women’s Track & Field Has 21 Top-10 Marks at Samford Open

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alexis Wilson won the triple jump as TSU women’s track & field had 21 top-10 finishes at the Samford Open on Saturday.

The 2023 SWAC Outdoor triple jump winner and NCAA Preliminary Round participant, Wilson recorded a mark of 38-2.75 feet as the sophomore recorded the winning mark on her second attempt. The mark currently stands at third in the SWAC. Freshman Kennedy Brown (36-2) and junior MyKaylyn Davis (35-5) improved on their marks from last week as they finished sixth and eighth, respectively.

Freshman Avia Trammel (7.96) placed fourth in the 60-meter dash followed by a ninth-place finish by freshman Destinee Payne (8.09). Freshman Erica Grant (25.26) placed second overall and is sixth in the SWAC in the 200 while freshman Diamond Barrett finished 10th (25.67).

Sophomore Bayli George ran an indoor personal best time of 57.71 as she placed sixth overall in the 400 while freshman Desirae Roberts ran a personal best and the sixth-best time in the SWAC (8.79) in the 60-meter hurdles en route to a second-place finish. Senior Kayla Jenkins placed fifth in the same event after a run of 9.06.

Jessica Williams competed in the 5,000-meter run (20:50.4) and placed ninth overall while running the fastest time in the SWAC. The mile relay team of Roberts, Lauren Taylor, Tardranique London and George ran a mark of 4:01.05 to place third overall.

London placed seventh in the high jump with a length of 4-11 while Barrett placed 10th (4-11). Morgan Haywood placed eighth (9-2.5) and posted the second-best mark in the SWAC in the pole vault. Wilson (17-4.25) and Payne (17-3.5) placed fifth and seventh, respectively in the long jump while freshman Kayla Roberts-Day (36-8.5) and junior Ronelle Plaza (35-5.75) placed seventh and ninth after the shot put.

Plaza finished third overall in the weight throw (49-8.25) as her mark stands at fifth in the SWAC followed by junior Angela Sanchez’s eighth-place (47-1) finish.

TSU is back in action on Jan. 26 and Jan. 27 at the Robert Platt Invitational on the UH campus.
