Three Tigers Notch Double Figure Kills In Victory Over UAPB

Three Tigers tallied double figure kills as the Texas Southern volleyball team came out on top of Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3-1 on Monday evening at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.

Texas Southern (6-18 Overall, 6-3 SWAC) was paced offensively by Chenise Cook who notched 14 kills. Kourtni Collier and Kennedy Reed both added 13 kills each. Britney Ong led the defensive side as she pulled in 18 digs, while Dallas Ballanay-Flores and Ava Ray combined for 38 assists.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff (5-20, 2-8) was led offensively by Zykia Jones who registered 10 kills. Anaiah Jordan led UAPB in assists and digs as she would get 16 in each category.

The Tigers won the match after set scores: 25-23, 25-17, 22-25, 25-20.

How It Happen
Set 1l TSU was down 11-5 but scored six unanswered points to tie the set. Down the stretch, the Tigers led 22-16. The Golden Lions tried hard to fight back after a 5-1 run to trail 23-21, but it wasn’t enough as Ong and Ray would get kills before UAPB could catch up.

Set 2l The Tigers limited the Golden Lions kills to just 5-of-31 as TSU would tally 14-of-36 in the set.

Set 3l Texas Southern dropped the third set 25-22 as seven errors to Pine Bluff’s one proved to be costly.

Set 4l The fourth set was as close as an 18 point tie. The Golden Lions could only get two more points as the Tigers remaining points included three kills and a a service ace by Ong to seal the victory.

>TSU tallied 62 kills on 178 attempts for a .213 hitting percentage
>UAPB registered 85 kills on 152 attempts (.204 hitting percentage)

Up Next
Texas Southern will participate in its second SWAC Cluster of the season beginning on Sunday against Alabama A&M at 1 p.m. and Jackson State at 7 p.m. The Cluster will conclude with Mississippi Valley on Monday as the match will begin at 11 a.m.
