Softball Captures Series Over Prairie View A&M

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – TSU softball captured the series against Prairie View A&M with a doubleheader split on Saturday.
 
TSU 9, PVAMU 2
TSU set the tone early and never let off the gas as they won 9-2 in the opener.
 
Julia Bilbao opened the game with a single, moved over on Ashling Shahan’s bunt before scoring on Daryn Haslam’s RBI. Tierrah Williams upped the lead to 2-0 with a sac fly. TSU moved ahead 4-0 in the second on Julia Bilbao’s two-RBI single and 5-0 in the third on Ja’Lynn Swiney’s RBI.
 
PVAMU cut the deficit to 5-2 with a two-run homer in the fourth but TSU returned to the scoreboard as Jordan McClain scored on Bilbao’s RBI in the sixth. TSU tacked on three more runs in the seventh as Swiney drove in two more runs followed by McClain’s RBI.
 
Bilbao finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, two walks and a run scored while Shahan also had two hits and a run.  Swiney had three RBI followed by two runs apiece from McClain and Tevanae Tate.
 
Nora Rodriguez struck out three over four innings while Tierrah Williams came on in relief and only allowed one hit.
 
PVAMU 9, TSU 7
TSU struck early but PVAMU scored seven runs in the middle innings and held off the Tigers at the end for a 9-7 win.
 
PVAMU crossed home two runs in the first but TSU answered back with a vengeance after a five-run second to lead 5-2. Tierrah Williams’ leadoff homer in the third upped the lead to 6-2 but PVAMU hit a homer in the bottom frame and an RBI single to draw within 6-5.
 
PVAMU moved ahead with two runs in the fourth and another two in the fifth to up the margin to 9-5. Ashling Shahan closed the gap to 9-7 with an RBI in the sixth but that would be the last run for the Tigers.
 
Shahan, Williams and Swiney all had two hits for the Tigers with Shahan leading the team with two RBI. Jazmine Gendorf fell to 8-7 on the season as she lasted 4.2 innings.

TSU is back in action on Tuesday for a single home contest against Stephen F. Austin at Memorial Park. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
