Soccer Falls In Road Opener

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas Southern dropped its road opener at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday afternoon.

The Islanders scored in the 40th minute after a stolen ball led to a goal which squeaked past the goalie for the 1-0 lead. The deficit grew to 2-0 late in the first half as the Islanders converted a long kick from their side of the field and it turned into a footrace as Megan Guy converted a goal just over the outstretched arms of goalie Jaidyn Christophe.

The Islanders increased their lead to 3-0 in the second half on a free kick before tacking on a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes.

TSU had several opportunities at scoring in both halves as Ari Mendez had a pair of shot attempts in the first half followed by an attempt from Ashley Arnes. Sammie Garcia had a pair of attempts in the second half along with Laura Chavez and Hayden McMillan. In the goal, Christophe had a total of nine saves in her first appearance this season.

TSU will have two weeks of rest before returning to action against UTRGV on Friday, Sept. 3 in Edinburg, Texas.
