Roberts, Williams Win Individual Titles, Women’s Track Places 3rd Overall In Outdoor Opener

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Jessica Williams and Desirae Roberts won a pair of individual titles as the TSU women’s track & field team opened the 2024 outdoor season with a third-place finish and 14, top-10 marks at the McNeese Cowboy Relays.
 
Williams won the 3,000-meter run in a time of 11:29.50 to win a tight race while Roberts finished four seconds ahead of the second-place finisher in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.85 en route to the title. Kayla Jenkins (1:15.48) and Lyriq Ray (1:16.75) finished 7-9 in the 400-meter hurdles while Ray placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in a run of 15.11.
 
Freshman Erica Grant placed second overall in the 100 after a run of 11.94.
 
In the relays, the 4×200 relay quartet of Amber Butler, Shelby Brooks, Bayli George and Tardranique London placed fourth after a run of 1:44.48. The sprint medley relay team of Diamond Barret, Roberts, George and London finished third (4:22.81) while the 4×100-meter team of Avia Trammell, Barrett, Tyeler Moore and Grant placed second (47.07).
 
In the field events, Destinee Payne (17-0.75) placed seventh in the long jump while Kayla Robert-Day placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 38-3.25 feet. Angela Sanchez placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 120-10 and followed it up with a fifth-place throw of 141-11 in the hammer. Morgan Haywood placed 10th in the hammer after a throw of 127-1.
 
The team is back in action at the 72nd TSU Relays on Friday and Saturday inside Durley Stadium on the TSU campus.
