Lawson Tallies Season High 21 Points In Home Loss To Grambling State

Taniyah Lawson tallied a season high 21 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Texas Southern women’s basketball team fell 65-60 to Grambling State Saturday night inside the H&PE Arena.

Grambling State (15-8 Overall, 9-3 SWAC) jumped out to a 10-2 start , but Texas Southern  used a 9-4 run to cut the deficit, to trail 14-11 going into the second.

Texas Southern (5-18, 4-8) outscored GSU 22-9 in the second quarter as they shot 9-of-13 from the field and 3-of-6 from behind the arc. TSU took a 10 point lead into the half (33-23).

TSU had its lowest scoring quarter in the third shooting just 26 percent from the field (5-of-19) to GSU’s 7-of-16 shooting from the field.

The game was as close as a two-point TSU deficit (57-55) with 2:11 remaining in the third after a pair of free-throws by Lawson, but that’s as close as it would get.

Lawson’s 21 points was on 7-of-12 shooting from the field including 4-of-9 from behind the arc. Nya Harmon contributed 14 points as she was 6-of-12 from the field.

GSU was paced offensively by Zayla Tinner who recorded 16 points as she was 11-of-12 from the charity stripe.  Anija Grant tallied a double double including 15 points and 13 boards.
