Women’s Basketball Faces UAPB Inside H&PE Arena

•The Texas Southern women’s basketball team will take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday inside the H&PE Arena. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.

•Texas Southern (2-11 Overall, 1-1 SWAC) had four players score in double figures as they edged Grambling State, 72-67 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play on Monday evening inside the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.

•The win at Grambling was head coach Vernette Skeete’s first conference win outside of Mississippi Valley. 

•TSU was led by Taniya Lawson who tied her season-high 17 points and added five boards. Anela Thomas followed up with 16 points and five boards. Nya Harmon added 13 points while Jaida Belton neared a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

• Arkansas-Pine Bluff (7-5, 2-0) scored 35 points off of turnovers on the way to an 85- 52 victory over the Alabama State Hornets at home Monday. UAPB was led by Maya Peat, who had 17 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

•Belton is the second leading blocker in the SWAC having 22 and the ninth leading rebounder, averaging 5.8 in 13 games played.

•Arkansas-Pine Bluff brings in the top scorer and assist leader in the SWAC, Zaay Green, who is averaging 18.5 points and 6.3 assists per game. Green also ranks fourth in rebounding averaging 7.3 per game.

•TSU Head Coach Vernette Skeete earned her first career win in the month of January with the win against Grambling State.

•The Tigers will have a lot to prove as they were selected to finish 11th in the Preseason SWAC Predicted Order of Finish.

• The Tigers brought in nine newcomers this year. However, they’ve lost nine letter- winners and feature a pair of new assistant coaches.
