Volleyball Goes 2-1 In SWAC Cluster

The Texas Southern volleyball team concluded the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Cluster with a 2-1 record as they fell to Alabama State but defeated Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman.

Texas Southern’s record is now 4-17 overall and 4-3 in SWAC play.

How It Happened

ASU 3, TSU 0: 16-25, 20-25, 17-25
In the first set, The Tigers trailed 10-7 after a kill from Kourtni Collier and an ace by Kennedy Reed. The Lady Hornets notched the next seven points to take a 17-7 lead and the Tigers never recovered from the deficit.

Tied at seven in set two, the Tigers took their largest lead of the set, 13-9 capped by a kill from Chenise Cook and a Lady Hornet attack error. After the next three points from ASU, Amber Johnson would slam one to the ground for the Tigers as they led 14-12. ASU answered back with the next eight points to take a 20-14 lead. Texas Southern responded with a 4-0 run led by a Reed kill to cut the deficit 20-18. A score of 21-19 was as close as the set would get as TSU fell 25-20.

ASU remained dominant in set three as they led the entire time. The set was as close as a four-point deficit (22-17).

TSU 3, FAMU 1: 18-25, 17-25, 25-16, 25-21, 15-10
The Tigers were down two sets but proved to be resilient in a battle to five sets. The set was tied at five then pushed to a 7-5 Tiger lead after a pair of kills by Reed and Gracie Lee. After a Rattler point, the Tigers would stun FAMU with four straight points that the Rattlers could not recover from which consisted of two kills and a service ace by Ryan Henderson.

TSU 3, BCU 1: 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 25-15
Texas Southern won the attack battle bringing in 57 kills to Bethune-Cookman’s 43. A host of Tigers is to thank for it as Reed had a match-high 18 kills. Amber Johnson tallied an additional nine kills while Cook chipped in eight. On the defensive side, Henderson and Britney Ong had 26 and 25 digs a piece.

Texas Southern will host Prairie View A&M on Sunday, Oct. 15 as it is Senior Day. The match is set for 3 p.m.
