Volleyball Earns USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award

The Texas Southern volleyball program was recognized for its hard work in the classroom as they received the United States Marine Corps/American Volleyball Coaches Association award for academic performance in the classroom.

“I want to commend our volleyball team for their academic performance in the classroom this past year,” said TSU Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Kevin Granger. “To be one of only three teams in the conference to earn this honor shows you the commitment they made to their classwork.”

Led by head coach Gabrielle Floyd, the team compiled a 3.3 or higher GPA during the spring 2021 semester as 17 student-athletes were recognized. TSU was one of three SWAC schools to earn the award as it honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale.

“One of our team goals last season was to have a team GPA of 3.0 or higher,” said Floyd. “During COVID, the focus was strictly on academics and they did their jobs as we exceeded our goal by a large margin as our next task is to earn this award on a yearly basis.”
