Volleyball Drops Contest To Southern In Five Sets

The Texas Southern volleyball team fell to Southern University as they battled it out in five sets in the H&PE Arena on Sunday evening.

Texas Southern (1-16, 1-2 SWAC) won the first two sets 25-15 and 25-17, but would fall three sets in a row 25-19, 25-17 and 15-11.

In the final set, the score was tied at five and down the stretch, the score was as close as a one-point Tiger deficit, 10-9. Southern would get the next two points off of Tiger errors to lead 12-9. After an attack error on SU, the Lady Jaguars outscored TSU 3-1 to win the match.

The Tigers were paced offensively by Amber Johnson who had 12 kills on 31 attacks (.194 hitting percentage). Kourtni Collier also tallied double figure kills as she chipped in 11 kills on 26 attacks for a .346 hitting percentage. Ryan Henderson led the way for the Tigers defensively, tallying 21 digs.

Southern was led offensively by Elise Doome as she had 12 kills on 38 attacks (.289 hitting percentage). Jordan Felix had a game-high 31 assists Alissa Santoyo led defensively with 18 digs.

> Texas Southern finished with 61 kills, 26 errors, 209 attacks (.167 hitting percentage)
> Southern hit .164 (46 kills, 17 errors, 177 attacks)
> TSU recorded 80 digs and 38 assists.
> SU registered 67 digs, 49 assist and four service aces

Texas Southern will remain at home as they take on Alcorn State on Monday at 6 p.m. at the H&PE Arena.
