Volleyball Wins 3-1 Over Alcorn State

HOUSTON, Texas – The Texas Southern University volleyball team cruised to a 3-1 victory over Alcorn State University 3-1 (25-20, 25-15,15-25, 25-12).

TSU (8-18, 8-7 SWAC) remains in fifth place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference postseason tournament standings with just one regular season contest remaining. The SWAC tournament will be hosted by Texas Southern beginning on Friday, Nov. 18 and runs through Sunday, Nov. 20.

Amber Johnson and Thalia Cordero Moreno were tops on the team in kills with 12 each.

Alcorn State (5-23, 4-11 SWAC) had just one set where the attack game was flowing the way the coaching staff wanted and that was the third set, which the Braves were 15-3-31 for a .387 hitting percentage. The Braves combined to hit 24-20-98 for a .041 attack percentage.

The lack of hitting percentage for the Braves was thanks in large part a 49-39 advantage in digs and 5-3 in blocks.

Tied at 6-6 in the first set, TSU would turn things around and go on a 14-4 run thanks in large part to three kills from Caitlyn Roland. Alcorn State staved off seven consecutive set points before Janiya Chapman collected the final kill of the first stanza for the Tigers.

The second set was highlighted by back-to-back-to-back kills from Cordero Moreno during a 5-0 run to close out the set. Set three saw Alcorn State impose its might before things changed quickly in the fourth set for TSU.

The Tigers shot out to 16-3 lead and never looked back in the fourth and final set.

Dallas Balanay-Flores and Alaiyah Fields paced the offense in their setter positions with Balanay-Flores earning a team-best 22 while Fields added 18 assists to go along with 11 digs for an assist-digs double-double performance.

Britney Ong also added 11 digs for the Tigers.
