TSU Sweeps SWAC Track & Field Athletes Of The Week Honors

Both Texas Southern men’s and women’s track & field teams swept the SWAC’s Weekly Honors on Friday.

The SWAC named TSU’s women’s track standouts Briana Creeks its women’s track athlete of the week and Phylan Perkins its field athlete of the week for their outstanding performances during competition Jan. 28-29.

Creeks won her heat in the 800m (2:20.87) and finished fifth overall while also moving up to third in the SWAC in the event. Perkins posted the top mark in the league after a personal-best mark in the weight throw at the Houston G5 & Super 22 Invitational this past weekend. She topped 60-feet (18.21) during her fifth attempt before her personal best 60-5.75 foot throw (18.43) on her final attempt as she finished second overall.

On the men’s side, Jose Gonzalez was named the SWAC track athlete of the week while Kenneth Pree was tabbed field athlete of the week for their outstanding performances during competition Jan. 28-29.

Gonzalez had a strong weekend with a pair of personal bests in the mile and 3,000. Gonzalez finished seventh overall in the mile after a run of 4:17.13 followed by an eighth-place run in the 3,000 (8:33.71). The junior is currently ranked No. 2 in the SWAC in the mile and third in the 3,000.

Pree posted the top mark in the league in the long jump with a mark of 24-5. He recorded the mark on his third attempt as the jump cemented his place atop the SWAC ranking up to this point of the season.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday at the Charlie Thomas Invitational In College Station, Texas. The event will be streamed live on ESPN.com.
