TSU Softball Wins Opener After McKnight’s Walk-Off In The 10th

Tamera McKnight hit a walk-off RBI single in the 10th inning as TSU defeated Alcorn State 2-1 in a pitching duel at Memorial Park.

Alcorn State went ahead 1-0 in th third as Hannah Dules hit a leadoff single and pinch runner Kennedy Terry scored on a grounder to third. TSU overcame the deficit in the fourth as Tevanae Tate hit a solo homer over the right field fence for the 1-1 tie.

TSU pitcher Jazmine Gendorf and the TSU defense came up huge inning-after-inning as Alcorn State had the go-ahead runs at third in the sixth and eighth innings but TSU made the plays when it counted.

With the international run rule in play to open the 10th , which puts a runner on second to begin the inning, Alcorn State’s Mychal Hall reached third but Gendorf forced back-to-back grounders to end the inning. Julia Bilbao was placed on second to open the bottom of the 10th and McKnight made quick work with an RBI to left field for the game-winner.

Tate led TSU with two hits and a run scored while Gendorf allowed only four hits while striking out four.

TSU is back in action for a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday at Memorial Park. New TSU head women’s basketball coach Vernette Skeete will throw out the first pitch.
