Softball Sends Senior Class Home In Style With Doubleheader Sweep

Texas Southern wrapped up its SWAC schedule and sent its 11 seniors home in style with a doubleheader sweep over Alcorn State on Saturday at Memorial Park.
 
TSU 6, ALCORN STATE 1
Lailah Bell threw a two-hitter as TSU scored four runs in the first and never looked back in a 6-1 win in the opener.
 
Jordan McClain scored the game’s first run in the first before Tevanae Tate homered for the second straight day for an early 4-0 lead.
 
Alcorn State would score a run in the second but Bell and the TSU defense held ground from that point as that would be ASU’s only run. TSU tacked on two more runs in the fifth as Crimson Davis drove in two runners for the game’s final runs.
 
McClain and Pamela Richardson both had two hits while Tate had three RBI and two from Davis. Bell only allowed two hits and a run in seven innings.
 
TSU 14, ALCORN STATE 5
Five players had multiple hits as TSU ended its SWAC schedule and senior day festivities in style in a 14-5 decision.
 
Alcorn State hit a two-run homer to open the first inning but TSU would get a run back in the bottom frame on Daryn Haslam’s RBI single which scored Jordan McClain. McClain would record an RBI single in the second to tie the game at 2-all followed by RBIs from Pamela Richardson, Haslam and Tamera McKnight for a 5-2 decision.
 
ASU scored a run in the third to draw within 5-3 but McClain answered in the third with a two-RBI double along with Richardson’s bunt single as TSU led 8-3. The Lady Braves closed to within 8-4 in the fourth and loaded the bases with two outs but reliever Nora Rodriguez forced an inning-ending groundout.
 
TSU would break the game open in the bottom frame as Haley Castro hit a sac fly RBI followed by Julia Bilbao’s RBI single for a 10-4 lead. TSU scored its 11th run on a hit batter with the bases loaded along with Aubri Ford’s bases loaded walk. Ja’Lynn Swiney closed out the scoring with a two-RBI double as TSU would end the game via the run-rule despite a late ASU run in the fifth.
 
McClain finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and four runs while Richardson, Haslam, Mila Rodriguez and Bilbao all had two hits. Richardson, Haslam and Swiney drove in two RBI while Bilbao and Davis scored three and two runs, respectively. Tierrah Williams earned the run with two strikeouts while Nora Rodriguez also added two strikeouts.
 
TSU closes out the regular season Tuesday at Lamar for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
