Tigers Snap Five Game Losing Streak In 71-63 Win Over Alcorn
The Texas Southern women’s basketball team had four players score in double figures as they snapped a five-game losing streak at home in a 71-63 win against Alcorn State Monday night.
Texas Southern (6-22 Overall, 5-12 SWAC) shot its best quarter in the first as they were 10-of-18 from the field and 3-of-7 (42.9 percent) from behind the arc. The Tigers outscored Alcorn State (8-19, 6-10) 23-19 in the first.
The Tigers led by as many as nine points in the second quarter (30-21) after a layup by Nya Harmon with 3:30 remaining. The Lady Braves used a small 8-6 run to cut the deficit with TSU leading, 36-29 going into the break.
Down the stretch, the game was tied at 42 points each, but ultimately, the Braves had a 50-47 advantage going into the final period. TSU opened the fourth on a 14-6 run capped by a three-pointer by Daeja Holmes with 3:45 remaining to lead 61-56. The game was as close as the Tigers leading 66-63 with 1:11 remaining, as the Tigers put the game away for good closing out on an 4-0 run.
Texas Southern was led Jaida Belton’s 12 points and nine boards. Nya Harmon added 12 points as well, while Taniya Lawson and Daeja Holmes tallied 11 points each.
Destiny Brown paced the Lady Braves with a game-high 23 points, while adding eight rebounds, five assists, four blocks and two steals. Nakia Chatham followed with a double double having 14 points and 12 boards.
Texas Southern will play in its final home game against Prairie View on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
