Tigers seek return to winning ways at Mississippi Valley State

ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Tigers of Texas Southern University will try to salvage a split of their two-game road trip Monday when they visit Mississippi Valley State. Tipoff is scheduled for approximately 7:30 p.m. (or about 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women’s game). The game will be aired on MVSU’s Athletics YouTube channel.

The host Delta Devils (3-17) have struggled this season, and are 1-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. One of two Texans on their roster, Jordan Evans (Waco, Texas/Western Texas College) leads the team in scoring with an average of 11.9 points per game.

High-scoring game?
The Tigers lead the SWAC in scoring, averaging 77.7 points per contest, and rank last in the league in scoring defense, giving up an average of 81.1 points per game. The Delta Devils rank ninth in the SWAC in scoring defense, as opponents average 81.0 points per contest against them.

Rebounds abound
Texas Southern ranks second in the SWAC in rebounding, grabbing 37.9 rebounds per game as a team. The Tigers also give up the most rebounds in the conference, as opponents get to 40.7 caroms per contest.

Patterson does it all
TSU guard Jalyn Patterson ranks second on the Tigers – and sixth in the SWAC – in scoring, averaging 13.5 points per contest. He also ranks second in the conference in assists, handing out 4.1 helpers per game.

TSU vs. Mississippi Valley State
Mississippi Valley State defeated Texas Southern 71-69 for the 2012 SWAC Tournament championship. Since then, the Tigers have won 11 of the last 12 meetings between the two teams. Valley’s lone win since 2012 came Jan. 23, 2017, when the Delta Devils defeated TSU 103-89 in Itta Bena in a game that was aired on ESPNU.
