Tigers End With 1-1 Draw Against Southern

Texas Southern soccer kicked off a doubleheader weekend at home with a nail-biting match against Southern which resulted in a 1-1 draw.

The Tigers wasted no time in claiming possession of the ball and setting a tone for tonight’s match as JJ Binder posted a goal in the sixth minute of the match which gave TSU a 1-0 lead.

The team-maintained possession of the ball for most of the first half with junior Ashley Arnes, senior Ayana Noel, and graduate student Ari Mendez respectively posting shot attempts within 10 minutes of one another.

Binder delivered another shot attempt in the 23rd minute while Noel posted a header after being fouled on by the Jaguars. Sophomore Kaila Smith delivered a strong corner kick in the 40th minute while goalkeeper, Jaidyn Christophe blocked four shot attempts to end the first half.

There was no denying the increased physicality in the second half as three yellow cards were issued between both teams. Southern scored on a throw-in during the 54th minute which leveled the game at 1-1.

Noel delivered another header and shot attempt while Binder posted another shot attempt that was inches too high of the goal late in the half. Sophomore Liz Alberto had the last shot attempt for the Tigers in the 87th minute while Christophe added three additional saves before the final whistle concluding Friday’s match with a 1-1 tie.

The Tigers conclude their home doubleheader when they take on Jackson State on Sunday. Kickoff for Sunday’s match against the Tigers is at 1 p.m. inside Alexander Durley Stadium.
