Softball Records Saturday Sweep

COMMERCE, Texas – Texas Southern softball swept a pair of games on Saturday at the Lion Classic after wins over UMass Lowell and Stonehill College.
 
TSU 11, UMASS LOWELL 6
TSU wasted no time in setting the tone with a nine-run first inning as they defeated UMass Lowell 11-6.
 
Freshman Marisa Perla’s bases loaded two-RBI double scored TSU’s first two runs in the first. Lanay Carr drew a walk followed by Madison Griggs’ RBI single for a 3-0 lead. Deana Zuniga drew a bases loaded walk for a 4-0 margin which was immediately followed by Ja’Lynn Swiney’s two-RBI single for a 6-0 lead. Pam Richardson’s RBI on a fielder’s choice scored the seventh run while Marissa Martinez scored the eighth run on a throwing error. Perla’s third RBI of the inning scored TSU’s ninth run.
 
Griggs and Zuniga opened the second with singles as a throwing error by the River Hawks led to a Griggs’ run. A bases loaded walk by Richardson upped the score to 11-0 as Zuniga scored.
 
The River Hawks would add six runs between the third and fifth frames but TSU recorded scoreless sixth and seventh innings to seal the win.
 
Perla went 3-for-5 with three RBI and run while Griggs and Zuniga had two hits each. Swiney and Richardson both added two RBI while Richardson and Griggs scored twice.
 
Melonie Guardiola earned the win while Lailah Bell added three strikeouts.
 
TSU 5, STONEHILL COLLEGE 0
TSU used another strong start and rode the arm of Madalynn Gonzales as they claimed a 5-0 win.
 
Jordan McClain opened the bottom of the first with a leadoff single and stole two bases. Pam Richardson drew a walk and stole second which set up Saniah Henderson’s two-RBI single.
 
Stonehill had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the second but Gonzales picked up a big strikeout to end the inning. Deana Zuniga and Karisma Garcia both reached base to open the bottom of the second which led to Marissa Martinez’s RBI double. McClain’s RBI upped the lead to 4-0 to close out the inning.
 
TSU returned to the scoreboard in the fifth as Henderson, who reached on a single, scored on Madison Griggs’ RBI double. That was all the Tigers needed as Gonzales shut down Stonehill for her first career shutout at TSU.
 
Henderson and Griggs both finished 2-for-3 as Henderson had two RBI. Gonzales struck out three and only allowed five hits in the shutout.
 
TSU is back in action for its classic finale against Texas A&M-Commerce at 2 p.m. Sunday.
