Softball Falls To UIW In Extra Innings

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Victory was within sight but a three-run extra inning by Incarnate Word was the difference as they claimed a 4-3 win over TSU on Tuesday.

UIW scored on a fielder’s choice in the opening inning but TSU held them scoreless until the offense came through in the sixth.

Pinch hitter Jayla Briggs singled and moved to second on an error. Tierrah Williams drew a walk which led to a pitching change. Jordan McClain reached based on a fielder’s choice which led to Ja’Lynn Swiney’s RBI single for the 1-1 tie. UIW would record a one out double in the bottom of the sixth but that would be as far as they would get as reliever Nora Rodriguez recorded back-to-back outs.

Williams hit a two-run homer in the eighth for a 3-1 lead. Using the international run rule, which automatically places a runner on second to begin the inning, UIW hit three straight singles which led to back-to-back RBI and a tie game. TSU would regroup with back-to-back groundouts but an RBI single by the Cardinals would end the game.

Swiney finished 3-for-4 with an RBI while Williams had two runs and two RBI. Both Jazmine Gendorf and Nora Rodriguez saw action on the mound as Gendorf struck out two while Rodriguez struck out one in the loss.

TSU is back in action this weekend with a key series at Southern beginning on Friday at 5 p.m. in Baton Rouge, La.
