Softball Blanks Jackson State 5-0 To Open SWAC Tournament Play

GULFPORT, Miss. – Texas Southern scored three times in the first and rode its defense the rest of the way as they defeated Jackson State 5-0 in the first round of the SWAC Tournament.

Pamela Richardson’s speed led to the first base runner for TSU in the first as she moved to third on Daryn Haslam’s shallow double to the outfield. Tierrah Williams drove in the first two runs with a well-placed hit right in front of the left field foul line. Two batters later, Mila Rodriguez drove in Haslam with a single down the middle as TSU led 3-0.

From there, starting pitcher Jazmine Gendorf and the TSU defense did the rest as every time JSU attempted to mount a rally, TSU was there to pull the momentum. JSU had two runners on with one out in the fourth but Gendorf forced a fielder’s choice and an inning-ending fly out with a runner on third. In the fifth, JSU had two runners on with one out but Gendorf forced a pop fly and second baseman Tierrah Williams made an athletic play on a fielder’s choice to close the inning out.

Richardson hit a one-out single in the fifth and scored on Haslam’s RBI single for a 4-0 lead. In the sixth, outfielder Tevanae Tate doubled to center with one out and scored the fifth and final run on Julia Bilbao’s RBI single.

Haslem went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored while Rodriguez finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Richardson scored a pair of runs for TSU while logging one hit.

Gendorf allowed only four hits and struck out two as she went the distance.

TSU will face Alabama State Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
