Lady Tigers sweep Pine Bluff to remain undefeated in SWAC play

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University swept a doubleheader from Arkansas–Pine Bluff on Saturday to remain undefeated in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
 
Texas Southern won the opening game 7-5 before winning the finale by a score of 4-1. Friday’s series opener was cancelled due to inclement weather.
 
The Lady Tigers (16-22, 12-0 SWAC) return to action Tuesday when they host Sam Houston State. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
 
GAME ONE: Lady Tigers 7, UAPB 5
TSU jumped out to a 7-0 lead after five innings of play and then fended off a late rally by the Lady Lions in the final two innings.
 
The Lady Tigers scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second inning, and then stretched their lead to 5-0 when Haley Castro knocked a three-run home run in the top of the fourth.
 
Castro added an RBI single in the fifth inning to cap TSU’s scoring. Paige Jackson had an RBI fielder’s choice in the inning.
 
Naomi Reyes pitched six and two-thirds innings to pick up the win for TSU. Mariah Youngblood came into the game in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on base and got the final out and picked up her first save of the season.
 
Castro and Ebony Wiltz had two hits apiece in the game for the Lady Tigers. Marissa Padron and Madi Marek scored twice in the game.
 
GAME TWO: Lady Tigers 4, UAPB 1
Texas Southern ceded a run in the first inning and then came back with a pair of two-run innings in the fifth and sixth to sweep the doubleheader.
 
With runners on base in the top of the fifth, it was Castro’s bat again that put runs on the board, as she knocked a two-run single Emma Ortiz and Wiltz.
 
Jackson knocked an RBI double in the sixth to score A’Leecia Bell; she later came home on a sacrifice fly from Coren Davis.
 
Destiny Ricks pitched a complete-game for the Lady Tigers, striking out six batters while walking only one.
