Holmes Nears Double-Double In Home Loss To California Baptist

Daeja Holmes neared a double-double as she had a game-high 21 points to go with nine rebounds as the Texas Southern women’s basketball team fell to California Baptist 83-62 on Wednesday afternoon inside the H&PE Arena.

Texas Southern (1-9) had a convincing first half beginning with the first quarter as they came out on top 24-19 shooting 10-of-17 from the field. Holmes scored eight of her 21 points in the first quarter including two from behind the arc.

A low scoring second quarter proved costly for the Tigers as they were limited to just 25 percent shooting from the field. The Tigers were only able to score 13 points to the Lancers 26, as CBU led 45-37 at the half.

The contest was as close as a five-point deficit with 6:22 remaining in the third after a jumper by Gretta Galban, but the Lancers went on a 13-6 run to close out the period with a 61-49 lead.

Jordyn Turner scored in double-figures as well for the Tigers having 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting.

California Baptist (10-1) had five players score in double figures, while Chloe Webb and Filipa Barros paced the offense with 18 points each.

The Tigers will have a short Christmas break before returning to the H&PE Arena to take on Tarleton State on Saturday, Dec. 30. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m.
