Holmes Tallies Double-Double In Home Loss to Mississippi Valley

A low shooting third quarter for the Texas Southern women’s basketball team was to blame in a 70-69 loss to Mississippi Valley on Monday afternoon inside the H&PE Arena.

Texas Southern (3-12, 2-2) hasn’t lost to MVSU since Jan. of 2016 (75-74) as the Tigers lead the all-time series 20-2 since since 2013. TSU Head Coach Vernette Skeete is now 2-1 against Valley.

The Tigers had a dominant first quarter outscoring the Delta Devils (2-15, 1-3), 22-6, as MVSU was limited to 2-of-14 shooting from the field. Scoring was tied at 20 in the second quarter as TSU went into the half with a commanding 44-26 lead.

TSU led by as many as 21 points (51-30) with 5:12 remaining in the third after a pair of free-throws by Taniya Lawson, however, that would be the last time TSU scored in the period as the Delta Devils went on a 17-0 run into the fourth quarter which was halted by a three-pointer by Nya Harmon with 7:29 remaining. The Tigers led, 54-47.

Valley used a 13-6 run to tie the game at 60. Down the stretch, the score was tied at 69 with 13 seconds remaining. McKnight found her way to the charity stripe with two seconds remaining to give MVSU a 70-69 win.

Harmon led the Tigers with 16 points. Daeja Holmes tallied the team’s first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 boards, while adding five steals. On the defensive side, Imani Morris tallied three blocks.

Mississippi Valley was led offensively by McKnight who had a game-high 21 points and five boards. Leah Turner followed up with 16 points and seven boards while Jaylia Reed added 12 points.
