Baseball Closes Out Series With Offensive Explosion In Win At Prairie View A&M

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Texas Southern closed out its series against Prairie View A&M on a positive note as they won a 16-4 decision Sunday afternoon.
 
The Panthers took an early 1-0 lead in the first but TSU quickly took control in the second as Reuben Bennevendo drove in two runs followed by Johnathon Thomas’ and Jeremy Gaines’ RBI doubles. A PVAMU error allowed another TSU run to cross home as the Tigers led 6-1. Bennevendo tacked on another RBI in the third which scored Tyrese Clayborne for a 7-1 margin. TSU kept on rolling offensively with a three-run fourth which saw Gaines, Vasquez and Jeremy Almaguer score runs as the lead increased to 10-1. Justin Cooper and Almaguer recorded RBIs in the fifth for a 13-1 lead
 
PVAMU crossed home a run in the fifth but TSU kept the pressure on with two runs in the sixth. Clayborne drove in the final run for the Tigers in the seventh as Kobe Head struck out three batters in the bottom half as TSU won by the run-rule.
 
TSU had 17 hits as a team led by four apiece from Gaines and Clayborne. Thomas and Bennevendo both had two hits while Bennevendo also had a team-high three RBI. Lane Gordon received the start and allowed only one run in four innings of action before giving way to Adolf Castillo and Kobe Head.
 
TSU is back in action on Thursday against Grambling State at 5 p.m. at MacGregor Park.
