Baseball Claims Series Sweep Over Alcorn State

LORMAN, Miss. – TSU picked up a series sweep over Alcorn State after winning a doubleheader on Sunday.
 
TSU 17, ASU 7
TSU started off strong and survived two rocky innings before putting the game away in the top of the seventh for a 17-7 run-rule win in game one.
 
TSU scored its first two runs in the first as Roderick Coffee and Shannon Martin drew bases loaded walks. Alexander Olivo drove in two runs in the fourth for a 4-0 lead while Gabe Vasquez added an RBI which scored Daalen Adderley and Olivo in the fourth for a 6-0 margin. Vasquez and Coffee drove in runs in the fifth as Coffee also scored on a wild pitch for a 10-0 lead.
 
ASU began to chip away at the lead with three runs in the sixth and seventh innings as they drew to within a four-run game at 10-6. However, TSU broke the game open in the seventh with a seven-run frame as Noah Butler and CJ Castillo drove in runs followed by Olivo’s three-run shot. Shannon Martin closed out the inning with a run for the final margin.
 
Castillo, Olivo and Chase Cromer had multiple hits as Olivo had five RBI. Coffee added three RBI while Vasquez and Martin drove in two runs. Domenic Martinez earned the win after five scoreless innings.
 
TSU 9, ASU 4
TSU had another strong start to close out the series sweep with a 9-4 margin.
 
Jaden Jones’ sac fly drove in Vasquez in the second and Cromer stole home for a 2-0 lead. Coffee and Cromer added RBIs in the third to up the margin to 4-0. Olivo, Vasquez and Coffee drove in runs in the fifth for a 7-0 advantage followed by Adderley’s sac for an 8-0 lead. ASU scored once in the seventh but Jaden Jones’ inside the park homer moved TSU up 9-1 as ASU scored three times to close out the contest.
 
Jones and Castillo both had two hits while Jones and Coffee had two RBI. Cade Fontenot struck out nine and had a three-hit shutout for the win.
 
TSU is back in action on Friday at 3 p.m. for a big series against Grambling State at MacGregor Park.
