Women’s Basketball To Take On Southern Monday Inside H&PE Arena

•The Texas Southern women’s basketball team will look to avenge a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opener loss to Southern University as they will face them again on Monday inside the H&PE Arena. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.

•Texas Southern (5-18 Overall, 4-8 SWAC) is coming off a 60-55 home loss to Grambling State on Saturday. Taniyah Lawson posted a season high 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. Nya Harmon added 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field.

•Southern University (10-13, 8-4) beat Prairie View 75-68 in overtime on Saturday afternoon inside the William Nicks Building as Aleighyah Fontenot led SU with 17 points, two assists and three rebounds.

•SU leads the all-time series since 2011-12, 19-7. Southern won the first matchup this season, 64-45.

•Southern was predicted to finish second in the SWAC Preseason Poll.

•SU is led by Fontenot who is averaging 9.0 points per game.

•The Tigers are led offensively by Lawson as she averages 11.1 points and 2.9 boards.

•Jaida Belton is the fourth leading blocker in the SWAC having 37 in 23 games played.

•Texas Southern is 3-0 when scoring 70 points or more and 2-0 when wearing gray jerseys and shooting over 50 percent from the field.

•The Tigers will have a lot to prove as they were selected to finish 11th in the Preseason SWAC Predicted Order of Finish.

• The Tigers brought in nine newcomers this year. However, they’ve lost nine letter- winners and feature a pair of new assistant coaches.
