Women’s Basketball Concludes Regular Season In Winningly Fashion

Four Tigers scored in double figures as the Texas Southern women’s basketball team concluded the regular season with a 83-70 win against Prairie View A&M inside the H&PE Arena.

Texas Southern concluded the regular season going 7-22 Overall, 6-12 SWAC. The Tigers split the season series against the Panthers.

The Tigers played its best period in the first quarter, outscoring Prairie View (11-17, 7-11) 27-19. Texas Southern was 10-of-16 (62.5 percent) from the field including being 3-of-3 from behind the arc, while the Panthers were 7-of-14 from the field.

The Panthers opened the second quarter with a jumper by Ryann Payne as the Tigers led 27-21. After back-to-back three-pointers by Holmes with 48 seconds remaining in the second, Texas Southern led 45-32. Kayla Smith responded with a tre of her own to help the Panthers as TSU had the 48-35 advantage going into the half.

Prairie View won its only quarter in the third, 19-17 but the Tigers would still enter the final period up, 65-54. The game got as close as a 79-69 with just under two minutes remaining after a free-throw by Payne. Texas Southern closed out on a pair of free-throws by Nya Harmon and a layup by Jaida Belton.

Taniya Lawson led TSU with 19 points, while Holmes followed up with 18 points, six boards, and five assists. Alisa Knight registered 12 points and Jaida Belton tallied a double double with 10 points and 11 boards.

Prairie View was led by Payne who had a game high 25 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the field.
