Volleyball Falls Short In Day One Of SWAC Cluster 2

The Texas Southern volleyball team concluded the first day of Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Cluster 2 going 0-2 as they fell to Alabama A&M and Jackson State inside Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center on Sunday evening.

Texas Southern is now 6-20 Overall, 6-5 SWAC.

AAMU 3, TSU 1
Texas Southern played a convincing first set with a 25-16 win, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 13-9 in kills.

The second set was closer (25-23) but this time AAMU would win the attack battle as they posted 17 kills on 34 attempts to TSU’s eight kills on 29 attempts.

The third set was tied at 17, then Gracie Lee and Kennedy Reed posted one kill each to take a 19-17 Tiger lead. After a two-point point exchange, TSU led 21-20, however the Lady Bulldogs scored six unanswered points to seal the match 25-21.

Seven errors in the fourth set proved costly for the Tigers as Alabama A&M would only have two. The Lady Bulldogs won the set 25-20 to win the match.

Reed paced the TSU offense with 12 kills, while Amber Johnson had double figure kills as well with 11. Ava Ray and Dallas Balanay-Flores combined for 40 assists, and Britney Ong tallied 19 digs.

Caitlin Shaw had a match-high 16 kills for AAMU. Grace Tapscott registered 14 kills, while Michell Jerez dished out 17 digs.

JSU 3, TSU 0
Jackson State outscored the Tigers 20-10 in kills in set one as they came out on top 25-20.

Set two was as close as a 19-point tie as JSU went on a 6-2 run to win the game, 25-21.

Jackson State led by as many as 10 points in the third set (20-10). The Tigers couldn’t recover from the deficit as they fell 25-16.

Texas Southern will participate in day two of SWAC Cluster 2 on Monday as they take on Mississippi Valley State inside the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m.
