Vasquez Totals 8 RBIs, 2 Home Runs In 17-7 Win Over Arkansas-Pine Bluff

Gabe Vasquez hit multiple homers and drove in eight RBI as TSU opened a three-game series with a 17-7 run-rule win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Friday.

TSU jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the top of the first on Vasquez’s three-run homer, Roderick Coffee’s patient full count solo homer and Jordan Vidato’s RBI single. UAPB cut it to 5-3 after the top of the second but TSU answered the Golden Lions back in the bottom half as Jeffry Mercado drove in a run along with Alexander Olivo’s stolen base at home.

With two outs in the third, Daalen Adderley drove in CJ Castillo while Vasquez drove in Adderley for a 9-3 margin. UAPB scored once in the fourth but TSU gained the run back in the bottom half as Chase Cromer scored on Victor Molina’s sac fly.

The Golden Lions wouldn’t go away as a two-run homer in the fifth closed the deficit to 10-6 but once again the Tigers fought back as Vasquez hit a three-run homer along with RBIs from Olivo and Molina. With TSU ahead 15-6, UAPB scored once in the sixth but TSU put the game away for good in the eighth as CJ Castillo and Vasquez recorded RBIs to trigger the run-rule.

Abraham Delon improved to 5-1 as he struck out nine in six innings. Vasquez went 4-for-4 with two walks, two runs and eight RBI followed by two hits from CJ Castillo, Adderley and Chase Cromer.

Due to expected inclement weather on Sunday, the series will conclude with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday at MacGregor Park.
