SAN ANTONIO – A trio of three-run innings was the difference as TSU dropped the finale of its three-game series at Incarnate Word by a 13-5 margin Sunday afternoon.
Tyson Thompson opened the game with a leadoff single and eventually made his way home thanks to solid TSU baserunning for an early 1-0 lead. The lead was brief however as UIW opened with a leadoff triple followed by a one out two-run homer and RBI double for a 3-1 lead.
Jordan Vidato led the second off with a four-pitch walk, stole second and eventually scored on Michael Zamora’s RBI single for a 3-2 deficit. But once again, every time TSU made headway offensively UIW responded as they tacked on two runs in the second on two outs.
The Cardinals scored three times in the third to lead 8-2 but TSU kept battling as Vidato, who opened with a single, scored on Tyrese Clayborne’s sac fly. Zamora doubled to right and eventually scored for an 8-4 margin on Justin Coper’s RBI single. The Tigers were on the verge of getting out the fifth unscathed with two early strikeouts but an error and hit batter led to a pair of UIW hits and another three-run frame. TSU added a run in the seventh on a sac fly as that would be the final run of the game.
Zamora led TSU with a 2-for-4 afternoon at the plate along with a run and RBI. Vidato scored twice in addition to Tyson Thompson. Brian Williams fell to 0-2 on the season as he received the start on the mound.
TSU is back in action Tuesday and Wednesday at Texas Tech as Tuesday’s game will start at 3 p.m. followed by a 1 p.m. Wednesday start.
