PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Tigers of Texas Southern University saw their three-game winning streak snapped Saturday in a 79-73 loss at Prairie View A&M.

TSU’s Jeremy Combs scored 23 points and pulled in 20 rebounds to lead the Tigers (7-9), who fell to 2-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Eden Ewing also tallied a double-double for Texas Southern, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

John Jones scored 13 points for Texas Southern, making three out of his seven 3-point attempts.

Gerard Andrus scored 24 points for Prairie View A&M (5-11, 3-0 SWAC), leading four Panther players in double-figures.

The Panthers led by as many as 18 points in the first half, taking a 29-11 lead on a layup by Gary Blackston with 5:54 to play before halftime. TSU regrouped and finished the first half on a 19-6 run, trailing only 35-30 at halftime.

In the second half, the Tigers would cut Prairie View A&M’s lead to one point six different times, but were unable to take the lead. A 9-1 PVAMU run between the 10:06 and 6:00 marks of the second half stretched the Panthers’ lead to 61-52; the Tigers would get no closer than four points for the remainder of the game.

Both teams struggled at the free throw line despite many opportunities to shoot free throws. The Tigers shot 57 percent (24 of 42) from the stripe. The Panthers were not much better, making only 58 percent (21 of 36) of their free throws.

The Tigers return to action next Saturday when they host Grambling State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
