Softball Falls In Series Opener At Grambling State

GRAMBLING, La. – Marissa Martinez’s 3-for-3 outing with a double, a run scored and a run driven in was for naught as the Texas Southern University softball team fell to Grambling State University 3-2.

Dating back to April 27, 2012, TSU has owned the series against Grambling State having won 26 times, but GSU is now 3-2 in the last five contests.

GSU (12-8-1, 1-0 SWAC) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead when both runs were plated within the first four batters stepping up to the plate and TSU (2-11, 0-1 SWAC) recording just one out.

Once TSU’s Jazmine Gendorf settled into the circle, she recorded 13 straight outs before a GSU base runner reached at least second safely in the sixth inning.

While Gendorf was doing her best to keep her team in it, the bats finally came to life in the third inning when Martinez led off the stanza with a double before Ja’Lynn Swiney came to bat next and traded places with Martinez to cut the deficit down to 2-1. Martinez would bring TSU even with GSU at 2-2 when she doubled with two outs in the top of the fourth to plate Madison Griggs.

Unfortunately, TSU could not string anything else together to overtake GSU as the homestanding bunch scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth after the leadoff batter walked and stole second and was then sacrifice bunted to third and eventually home for the run.
