Softball Earns 2-1 Win Over Incarnate Word

TSU softball had both timely hitting and defense as they defeated Incarnate Word 2-1 Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Park.

TSU jumped on the board first as Lanay Carr hit a one-out single to center followed by Jordan McClain’s RBI double which drove in Carr. Jailyn Swiney’s fielder’s choice followed by an UIW fielding error upped the lead to 2-0.

From that point, TSU relied on its pitching staff and defense as Jazmine Gendorf, Lailah Bell and Melonie Guardiola held down the fort on the mound over the next the next five innings.

In the top of the third with one out, UIW had two runners on but TSU made a huge defensive play as Swiney tipped a line drive into the glove of McClain. McClain ended the inning with a throw to second to complete the double play.

UIW had runners in scoring position in both the fifth and sixth innings but TSU escaped with minimal damage as the Cardinals only scored one run. TSU’s Madison Battle opened the seventh with a solid defensive play as her diving catch in right field prevented a potential two-base hit. UIW drew a two-out walk and attempted to steal second but the game came to a close as TSU threw the runner out to end the game.

Carr led TSU with a 2-for-2 outing and a run scored while McClain went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Gendorf earned the win while Guardiola earned the save.

TSU’s series against Southern this weekend was postponed as the teams are working on a makeup date.
