Prairie View A&M Pulls Away Late For Win Over Women’s Basketball
TSU’s Micah Gray was held to a season-low two points while Adriana Avent, who is fresh off winning the SWAC Player of the Week for the second time this season, led the team with 15 points with nine of those coming from the free throw line.
Down 7-2 with 7:02 left in the first quarter, TSU would go on an 11-4 run the rest of the first quarter thanks to five points from Taniya Lawson and three points from Skye Green. An Avent jumper 16 seconds into the second quarter as well as another Avent jumper and eventually a three pointer from Anela Thomas surrounded a free throw from PVAMU to extend the run to 18-5 covering over nine minutes for a 20-12 lead.
This is when PVAMU (9-11, 6-3 SWAC) would flip the script and do nearly the same to the Tigers by going on a long run which covered the majority of one quarter and a few minutes into the next for the 32-25 lead for the Panthers with 7:32 left in the third.
Following Thomas’ three in the second quarter, TSU wouldn’t tally a made field goal again until Green’s three pointer with 2:27 left in the half for a 5:17 stretch of game clock without a made field goal. A 6-2 run midway through the third quarter kept TSU in the thick of things to cut the decifit down to 36-33. Another small run of 6-0 ending the third and beginning the fourth would see Gray finally score her first points of the night, but the Tigers were able to get to within 40-39 for a few moments.
PVAMU would go on a 15-4 run to give themselves a 55-43 lead with just 2:34 left in the game to all but put things away. TSU would make a rally to get the score to a more respectable number, but Prairie View would convert just enough free throws to take the victory.
Avent would finish with 15 points and five rebounds while Green recorded 11 points and two rebounds. Jaida Belton and Alisa Knight would once again lead the Tigers in rebounding with eight and seven, respectively.
TaMiracle Taylor and Kennedy Paul led PVAMU in scoring with 16 each.
The Tigers will have Monday off from game action and won’t see an opponent to lace up with shoes against until next Saturday when Florida A&M makes the long trip from Tallahassee, Fla., to Houston. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m. CST.
