Perkins WIns SWAC Hammer Title, Pole Vaulters Have Strong Outing For Women’s Track & Field

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Phylan Perkins brought home the gold in the women’s outdoor hammer throw for the second straight year while TSU received strong pole vault performances after the first day of the 2023 SWAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Prairie View A&M University.
 
Perkins set a personal best in the hammer with a throw of 55.02 meters (180-06 feet) on her final attempt. The Houston native wrapped up title after the first attempt as the only thrower to surpass the 50-meter mark in the event.
 
Ryann Richards and Morgan Haywood picked up points in the pole vault as Richards set a personal best mark of 10-6.25 feet for second place while Haywood logged a mark of 9-2.5 feet en route to a third-place finish.
 
Perkins picke­d up a point with an eighth-place finish in the javelin after a throw of 27.04 meters (88-08 feet).
