Jackson State scored 20 unanswered points midway in the third quarter for a 41-14 win over Texas Southern before a soldout crowd of 21,000-plus at PNC Stadium Saturday night.

After an early punt on TSU’s first drive, JSU marched 65 yards in 12 plays for an early 7-0 lead as Sy’veon Wilkerson rushed from 3 yards out after the PAT. TSU was forced to punt again and JSU answered in three plays as Shedeur Sanders found D.J. Stevens for a 38-yard strike and a 14-0 lead.

TSU would finally find success on its next drive as a 43-yard pass from Andrew Body to Randy Masters set up a first down at the JSU 27. Two plays later, Body found Jacorey Howard for a 25-yard touchdown reception and a 14-7 margin with 3:33 left in the first quarter. Unfortunately, the momentum was short as JSU responded with a four-play, 60-yard drive as Wilkerson rushed from 41 yards out and a 21-7 lead after the PAT.

TSU would miss a 34-yard field goal to open the second quarter but the defense stepped up with two punts as JSU kept the score at 21-7 entering the half.

TSU forced a JSU punt to open the third quarter but couldn’t capitalize offensively as they were forced to punt. However, JSU committed a fumble on the punt return and Xavier Goynes recovered at the JSU 23. TSU overcame a pair of penalties on its next drive which negated a score as Jacorey Howard took a 1st-and-goal run from the JSU 11 into the endzone as TSU came within 21-14 after Curtis Falkenburg’s PAT.

Unfortunately, TSU couldn’t seize the momentum as a personal foul call on a big sack led to a JSU possession at the TSU 10. Sanders capped off a seven-play, 61-yard drive with a 2-yard run as JSU led 27-14.  On TSU’s next drive, the punter’s knee was ruled down at the TSU 12 and JSU put the game out of reach with another touchdown. TSU punted again on its next drive and and JSU scored its final score after a 9-yard drive from Sanders to Shane Hooks.

TSU finished with 262 yards of total offense while JSU had 491. Body passed for 132 yards while Howard rushed for 38 yards and a touchdown. Tarik Cooper had seven tackles and a sack for TSU defensively.

TSU is back in action on Saturday for its home finale against Grambling State at 6 p.m. inside PNC Stadium.
