TSU Sports Information

• One week after a tough season-opening loss, the Texas Southern Tigers return to action as they’ll travel north to Toledo, Ohio to face the University of Toledo on Saturday.

• Saturday’s contest will feature live audio on KTSU 90.9 FM and will be shown live on ESPN+.

• TSU has not played in the state of Ohio since facing Central State in 1993 in Columbus at Ohio State’s stadium. The TSU basketball team is familiar with the state as the team has played four contests in Dayton since 2003. • This marks the first time TSU will face an opponent from the Mid-American Conference (MAC).

• Toledo is the first of two consecutive FBS opponents TSU will face this season as they’ll face Rice of the American Athletic Conference next week. • TSU marks the first SWAC school Toledo will face and only the fourth team all-time from the state of Texas. Two of its former opponents in St. Mary’s and Texas at Arlington do not field teams anymore.

• Both TSU and Toledo both can lay claim that they’ve played internationally as both teams have had games in the Bahamas. TSU played Central State (Ohio) in 2014 while Toledo participated in the 2021 Bahamas Bowl. • Toledo finished 9-5 last year and won the MAC Championship while earning a bid to the Roofclaim.com Boca Raton Bowl. Toldeo was picked to repeat in the preseason poll.

• TSU’s 486 offensive yards last week marked the most yardage in a season opener since a 423-yard output in 2019. • TSU quarterback Andrew Body has 4,102 career yards passing and ranks fourth all-time at TSU. Body has 1,282 yards and ranks 17th all-time in rushing and second all-time in total offense with 5,226 yards.

• The Tigers feature fifth-year head coach Clarence McKinney. A Houston native, McKinney attended high school across the street at Jack Yates High School and played collegiately at Montana State and the University of Mary. He also served as head coach at Yates before joining the staffs at Houston, Texas A&M and Arizona.

• Clarence McKinney is the 17th head coach in the history of Texas Southern Football. McKinney has a task ahead as the program has only had 28 winning seasons in 76 years of existence and hasn’t recorded a winning season since 2000. • McKinney won as a student at Yates High School and helped the University of Mary post three winning seasons as a student-athlete in college which made school history. As head coach at Yates, McKinney posted a mark of 30-8 over three years before moving on to the collegiate ranks as an assistant. As an assistant at Houston, Texas A&M and Arizona, McKinney has only experienced three losing seasons in his 11 years of collegiate coaching.
