Fontenot Strikes Out 11 As Baseball Defeats Prairie View A&M 2-0

BEAUMONT, Texas – Cade Fontenot had a career day with a complete game, 11-strikeout performance as Texas Southern baseball won the season series over Prairie View A&M by a 2-0 margin at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

TSU scored first in the second as Jeffry Mercado walked, moved to second on Chase Cromer’s bunt single followed by Michael Goudeau’s hit by pitch to load the bases. Shannon Martin’s sac fly scored Mercado for the 1-0 lead.

Both Fontenot and the TSU defense were in unison on Sunday with few tight jams. In the bottom of the sixth, PVAMU hit a one out double followed by a single. The bases would eventually load but Fontenot forced a line out to first to end the inning. PVAMU had another runner in scoring position in the seventh but TSU picked up a double play to get out unscathed.

TSU added an insurance run in the eighth as Mercado hit a two-out double and pinch runner Noah Butler stole third. Cromer’s RBI scored Butler for the 2-0 lead. PVAMU had two runners on with one out in the ninth but Fontenot forced a strikeout and ground out to end the game.

Daalen Adderley and Cromer had two hits for TSU while Cromer also had an RBI. Fontenot won the pitching duel with 11 strikeouts on five hits.

TSU is back at MacGregor Park on Friday to face Alcorn State at 3 p.m.
