Baseball Tarnishes GSU’s Immaculate SWAC Record, Goes 1-2 In Series

The Texas Southern University Baseball team managed to tarnish Grambling State’s perfect Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) record but went 1-2 in the three-game series in MacGregor Park.

Game 1: GSU 13, TSU 5
Texas Southern struck first at the bottom of the second inning after Jaden Jones singled and advanced a base after Nin Burns, ll singled to left field. Shannon Martin walked to load the bases. Michael Goudeau popped up to center field to score Jones.

Grambling State responded at the top of the third with three runs on two hits to take a 3-1 lead. TSU tied the game at the bottom of the frame, as Jones singled for two RBI’s, scoring CJ Castillo who singled to reach and Jason Lazo who doubled.

GSU put the game away in the sixth inning scoring six runs as Borom doubled to right field for three RBIs. Walker hit a two-run homer.

Jones led TSU going 3-for-4 and had three RBIs and scored two runs. Burns ll and Castillo had two hits each.

Game 2: GSU 13, TSU 3
Texas Southern was only able to pick up three runs in game two, as Burns ll picked up two of those with a homer to left field in the third inning. Grambling State put the game out of reach as four homers were hit for seven runs.

Game 3: TSU 15, GSU 13
Texas Southern rallied from being down five runs  (13-8) as they scored seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the eighth inning. Tyler Williams highlighted the inning with a three-run homer, while Burns ll homered to left field for two RBIs.

Castillo led the TSU Tigers going 3-for-3 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Additionally, he hit a grand slam in the bottom of the third inning. Herrera lll went 3-for-5 and scored two runs while Burns ll, Jones, and Williams each had two hits. Williams also tallied three RBIs.

Texas Southern will take will take on Tulane in New Orleans, La. on Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. start time.
