Baseball Splits With UAPB To Win Series

TSU wrapped up its latest SWAC baseball series with a doubleheader split over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday.

UAPB 15, TSU 9
UAPB overcame a two-run deficit with a nine-run ninth inning to claim a 15-9 win in the opener.

Daalen Adderley started the scoring off with a two-run homer in the first which also scored CJ Castillo. The lead grew to 4-0 after the second as Chase Cromer and Michael Goudeau both scored.

UAPB tied it after scoring four runs between the fourth and fifth innings but TSU moved ahead 8-4 as Alexander Olivo hit a sac fly in the fifth followed by Goudeau’s three-RBI double in the sixth. UAPB drew to within 8-6 after the seventh before the bottom fell out in the ninth as the Golden Lions scored nine runs to break the game open.

CJ Castillo, Adderley, Cromer and Goudeau had two hits each while Goudeau had four RBI. Jurgen Zwitzer dropped to 0-2 in a relief effort on the mound.

TSU 6, UAPB 4
TSU used timely pitching and clutch hitting in the seventh to claim a 6-4 margin over UAPB.

UAPB jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second but Chase Cromer’s two-RBI single in the second moved TSU on top 2-1. The lead grew to 3-1 after the third as CJ Castillo led off with a walk and scored on Adderley’s double. Gabe Vasquez drove in the fourth run to score Adderley.

Starter Cade Fontenot forced an inning-ending strikeout with the runner on third during a two-run UAPB fourth as they trailed 4-3. Josiah Castro entered in the fifth and recorded a 1-2-3 inning in addition to a flyout in the sixth with the tying run on third.

UAPB tied it at 4-all in the seventh and Castro once again had his back against the wall with the go-ahead runner on third and another on first with two outs. However, he forced an inning-ending groundout to shortstop.

Castillo hit a one-out single in the seventh but TSU was down to its final out after a strikeout. An injury to the UAPB pitcher after Alexander Olivo’s single forced a pitching change and TSU took full advantage as Vasquez hit an RBI double followed by Roderick Coffee’s RBI single for a 6-4 lead.

Justin Barnes struck two out in the eighth and Mateo Lamas had a 1-2-3 ninth which featured two strikeouts for the save.

Cromer went 3-for-4 with two RBI while Olivo, Ron Brown and Vasquez also had two hits. Both Cromer and Vasquez finished with two RBI.

The TSU pitching staff recorded 15 strikeouts as Castro earned the win in relief and Lamas the save.
