TSU Falls To Alabama State In First Game Of SWAC Cluster

The Texas Southern University volleyball team closed out its first game of a Southwestern Athletic Cluster with a 3-0 loss to Alabama State on Sunday inside the H&PE Arena.

Alabama State won the sets: 25-16, 25-20,25-17.

Set one was as close as a 10-7 Alabama State lead capped off by a service ace by TSU’s Kourtni Collier and a kill by Kennedy Reed. TSU couldn’t recover from the next seven points in a row from the Lady Hornets as ASU won the set 26-16.

TSU jumped out to a 13-9 start in set two, then ASU cut the deficit, scoring three points in a row as TSU led 13-12. After a kill by Amber Johnson, ASU went on an 8-4 run to take a 21-18 lead. The Tigers would only get two more points on ASU errors as they dropped the set 25-20.

The Lady Hornets raced out to a 6-0 start then TSU went on a 10-5 run to trail 11-10. ASU had its largest leads of the set (seven points)  at scores of 18-11 and 21-14. The Tigers received  the next three points on three ASU attack errors, but the Lady Hornets closed out the game with four kills in a row to win the match 25-17.

The Tigers were paced offensively by Gracie Hill who had seven kills, followed by Ava Ray who led the team with 10 assists. Reed and Ryan Henderson each had six kills each on the defensive side.

Alabama State was led by Kat Betancourt who had a match-hight 13 kills while Alaiyah Fields tallied 27 assists. Temperance Chatman led defensively with 16 kills.

> Texas Southern finished with 22 kills, 10 errors, 91 attacks (.132 hitting percentage)
> Alabama State hit .224 (44 kills, 18 errors, 116 attacks)
> The Tigers recorded 22 digs and 19 assists and five service aces
> The Lady Hornets registered 37 digs, 28 assist and 11 service aces
