TSU Cheer Wins Big At NCA Camp, Earns Right To Defend National Title In 2024

DALLAS – The Texas Southern University Cheerleading Squad had another strong outing this past weekend as it earned a bid to defend its 2023 National Championship along with several individual awards at the NCA Cheer Camp at SMU.

In addition to its national championship bid, the team also earned three blue ribbons and a spirit stick. To earn a coveted blue ribbon, a team must display strong technique while leading the crowd while showing little to no mistakes. Spirit sticks are presented to the squads showing the most spirit and enthusiasm for the day along with displaying strong attitudes, cooperation, promptness, leadership, cooperation, and relationships with other squads.

Individually, team mascot Tex the Tiger also made a strong impression by winning All-American Mascot honors and a pair of blue ribbons. Led by head coach Shontrese Comeaux and assistant coach Greg Malone, the team has been hard at work over the past month perfecting their techniques for camp season. The hard work has paid off as the team has received multiple honors over the past two weekends.

“Once again, I’m proud of our cheerleading team for their efforts this past weekend in Dallas,” said Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger. “The team has worked extremely hard for the accolades they’ve earned this summer and I know it will carry over to the fall and spring seasons. I want to commend Coach Comeaux and Coach Malone for their leadership and guidance in leading their student-athletes to unprecedented heights.”

The team, which will make its public debut in August, will make a return to Daytona Beach, Fla. in April of 2024 to defend its national championship. In addition, the TSU Sensations Dance Team will also make the trip to Daytona Beach for the first time ever to compete in the National Dance Alliance (NDA) Dance Championship.
