TSU Awarded NCAA AASP Grant For 3rd Consecutive Year

For the third straight year, the Texas Southern University Department of Athletics received a NCAA Accelerating Academic Success Program grant. TSU is one of 11 Division I schools to receive the grant which totals $100,000.

“I would like to thank everyone for their hard work during the selection process to help secure the grant once again,” said Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger. “Our academic staff, which is led by Assistant Athletics Director / Academic Enhancement Kimberly Evans, has done an outstanding job in utilizing our grant funds from previous awards to develop initiatives which has helped our student-athletes prepare for life once their playing careers have concluded. We will continue to expand on those initiatives for the upcoming academic year as we were pleased with the results of how our student-athlete programming was executed and received from the previous year.”

This marks the sixth time TSU has received the grant and the third consecutive year the program was awarded a substantial amount. A selection committee made up of member school representatives awards the funding each year. To be eligible for AASP grants, schools must either be in the Football Championship Subdivision or not sponsor a football program. Schools may request and receive up to $100,000 and are required to match at least 20% of the awarded amount. All 11 schools to receive AASP grants for the 2023-24 academic year will receive the amount of funds they requested.

The grants support school efforts to meet the requirements of the Division I Academic Performance Program, which ensures that student-athletes have access to an environment that promotes academic success. Funding may be used in a variety of ways, including academic facility enhancements, technology upgrades, professional development programming for staff, tutoring resources and student-athlete career development opportunities.

“We are thrilled to receive the NCAA-ASAP grant award once again,” said Assistant Athletics Director / Academic Enhancement Kimberly Evans. “We are incredibly thankful to the AASP Grant Committee for giving us the opportunity to impact our student’s lives academically. Our staff will focus on four initiatives where we will utilize the funds for the upcoming year such as our Tiger Summer Success Program, the Tiger Center for Academic, Career, and Professional Development, Graduate Assistants and our Tiger Athletic Career Fair.”
